Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery has two broad components: reconstructive plastic surgery and aesthetic plastic surgery.
Reconstructive surgery is a surgical procedure that aims to restore both function and appearance after an accident, like trauma or burns, an acquired illness, such as cancer or an infection, or due to a congenital condition. Dr Anita, with her honed surgical and non-surgical skills and techniques, provides solutions for patients, and collaborates with other subspecialty surgeons as required. These solutions are critical for patients who have lost or had tissue removed and require reconstruction to restore both function and appearance.
Aesthetic plastic surgery, also known as cosmetic surgery, aims to alter appearance by choice and is not typically available in the NHS. Again, both surgical and non-surgical treatments can be used to achieve these goals.
Aesthetic Medicine
How far can non-surgical treatments take a patient? How effective are they? The answer is, much further and much more effective than when Dr Anita started training over 20 years ago!
A more wholistic approach to beauty, incorporating advances in knowledge of dermatology, plastic surgery as well as nutrition, diet, exercises and sleep has resulted in huge gains for the patient
-
-
- For example, in the field of plastic surgery alone, there have been significant improvements in the understanding of the underlying anatomy of the face and neck, from anatomical dissection studies, three-dimensional imaging and facial reconstructive surgery.
- Non-surgical treatments for the different layers of the skin, such as radiofrequency, microneedling, laser, ultrasound-based therapy, have also brought further additive benefits.
- For the non-surgical injectable treatments, the quality of the fillers has improved, more accurate product placement within layers of the skin and the advent of skin boosters all translates to improved safety and better results
-
Surgery has its place, but with the aesthetic medical field as it is emerging now, Dr Anita believes it is a very important part of a plastic surgeon’s practice to be informed fully and not delegate the decision making process to anyone less experienced. It is the cumulative subtle changes over time and often a combination of different treatments that will make the biggest difference to the aging process.
A critical point is reached, which varies from person to person, when non-surgical interventions alone are no longer effective in maintaining a refreshed and rejuvenated look. Persisting beyond this point may lead to an unnatural and distinct appearance.
As a highly trained plastic surgeon, Dr Anita follows these responsibilities
-
-
- Informs patients about effectiveness and expected duration of aesthetic interventions, both surgical and non-surgical
- Manages patient expectations in a professional manner
- Recognises when non-surgical treatments will no longer be effective
- Performs some of the necessary surgical procedures to achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance
- Refers patients to a highly qualified and experienced colleague who can undertake further surgical procedures that lie outside her remit
